Get Discounts With KakaoPay Check Card

My KakaoPay Check card from MG 새마을금고

Isn’t it cute? It’s the newly-launched Kakaopay check (debit) card which is available in  different banks in Korea. Kakaopay is a mobile payment service that allows users to make purchases directly through KakaoTalk, an instant messaging platform which is widely used in the country. I usually use KakaoTalk in shopping for gift items and sending gift coupons to friends and family. Kakaotalk shopping is such a convenience for me especially in times when I can’t meet my loved ones to personally give my gift.

Yesterday I went to 새마을금고 bank to request for a new passbook as well as to apply for KakaoPay check card. I was just asked to affix my signature and enter my password for the new card. That’s it! I immediately got my new Kakaopay check card in just three minutes! I didn’t need to fill out an application form since I have an active account in the bank.

Here are the discounts that you can enjoy with this card.

Just like other check cards, there is a limit to the discount that you can enjoy in a month depending on the amount you spent the previous month. For example, if you spent 150,000-300,000 won using your check card, you’re entitled to 5,000 won worth of discounts (cash back). If you spent around 300,000 – 500,000 won, you’re entitled to 10,000 worth of  discounts. The more you spend, the bigger discount you’ll get.

One reason why I chose to open KakaoPay check card in this bank is that the minimum amount that you have to spend monthly is lower than in other banks-it’s only 150,000 won. Apparently, other banks require you to spend at least 200,000 or 300,000 won to enjoy the discount benefits.

Though the discount benefit is not that big, it is still better than ordinary check card. I have another check card (from the same bank) that also has cash back benefits. Unlike KakaoPay check card, it has lesser (1%) cash back points but I can use it anywhere. So every time I pay using that card, I get 1% back. It is automatically deposited in my account every 15 days. That’s what I use in establishments that are not covered by KakaoPay.

Korean government is actually encouraging people to use cards for taxation purposes. It is easier for the government to track business establishments’ income if payments are made through cards. So banks in Korea offer a lot of check cards with different discount benefits to promote card usage. You just have to choose the one that suits your needs and lifestyle. I’ll try to compare some check cards next time.

Thanks for visiting! Have a great day! 🙂
